A historical echo of Maine’s lumbering past can be seen in the Northern Maine Woods in the Allagash Wilderness. Abandoned in the 1930’s, two steam locomotives remain in their final resting spot in a clearing in the Northern Maine Woods next to Eagle Lake. The locomotives can be seen year round, with a simple snowmobile ride in the winter, or through a clearly marked trail spring through fall which can be hiked in under an hour. The journey is well worth the time–it is a rare sight to be able to come up on two full-sized steam locomotives in the middle of the woods!
If you are interested in going to see the abandoned steam locomotives check out the post on my website with full driving and hiking directions! http://untamedmainer.com/?p=655
