Maine Pond Hockey

Blue Hill Peninsula Teams
Two pond hockey teams from the Blue Hill Peninsula.

Maine hosts many home-grown pond hockey teams, from groups of like-minded local skaters to competition teams.  Most teams are formed through mutual connections or social media posts.  You may not realize it, but pond hockey is BIG in Maine.

There are two major pond hockey events that take place in Maine each year.  The 4th Annual Maine Pond Hockey Classic takes place February 12 – 14th, 2016 on Snow Pond in Sidney.  There are many different divisions including a Women’s division, COED, 40+ and college division.  The teams are 4v4 and can have up to 3 subs, for a maximum roster of 7 players, and registration closes January 12, 2016
.  For spectators there is a Beer Garden by The ENDZONE fully equipped with fire pits and, you guessed it, beer!  Bud Light to be precise.  And Bud Light is also a part of the Up For Whatever Area, with skating and shooting competitions, cornhole, hockey puck curling, and whatever else they can come up with.   Proceeds from the event go to support the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA of Greater Waterville.

2015
New England Pond Hockey Festival in Rangeley.

The second Maine pond hockey event is the New England Pond Hockey Festival, reaching it’s 10th anniversary in 2016.  This festival is held in Rangeley from February 5 – 7th, 2016 and has five divisions including an open division, Mens, Master Men’s for 50+, Women’s Open (Cameron Division), and Women’s Just for Fun division.  Team registration closes January 8th, 2016.  Teams are 4v4 with a minimum of 2 men & 2 women on the ice in the Wide Open Division.  All games are 30 minutes in length.

Aside from these larger events, there are smaller leagues and play-offs around the state.  If you’re interested in joining a team start asking around town or on social media sites.  You may be surprised how many other people in your area would love to hit the ice with you and get those frozen pucks out of the freezer.
